Prensilia is a company spun out from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Pisa, Italy) by researchers of the ARTS Lab (Advanced Robotics and Technology Laboratory), with long experience in research and development of innovative robotic and biomedical devices.
Company associates have been involved in several national and international research projects in the field of robotics, hand prosthetics and neuroscience allowing them to acquire and consolidate the key expertise of Prensilia. The know-how of Prensilia includes the following fields: advanced robotics and mechatronics, embedded control, micro-mechanical sensors, precision mechanics and ICT systems.
In the same year, Prensilia wins the sixth edition of the Vespucci Award for Innovation with the project named: “e-grasp, trans-radial prosthesis”. The prize is held by the Tuscany regional Government, and awards the most brilliant and innovative entrepreneurship project based on innovative solutions not yet industrially exploited. A great start for Prensilia!

Prensilia launches IH2 Azzurra, the first market available 5-axis, human-sized, anthropomorphic hand with actuation, sensory and control systems embedded in the palm.
IH2 Azzurra is able to replicate most of the human hand grasps at human-like speeds. The device is used around the world within several research scenarios. Check out IH2 Azzurra and the other products available.

The DeTOP project starts in 2016.
DeTOP (Dexterous Transradial Osseointegrated prosthesis with neural control and sensory feedback) is a collaborative research project financed by the Horizon 2020 funding scheme, coordinated by Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa.
In DeTOP, Prensilia will collaborate in the development of a trans-radial (below-elbow) hand prosthesis able to establish a bidirectional connection with the user. Here Mia Hand was born.
Mia Hand is a new paradigm of hand prosthesis, built on the concepts of ease of control, functionality, customizable aesthetics.

Prensilia is not only prosthetics. Thanks to the experience gained in the past and the multi-disciplinarity of the team, Prensilia extends its core business to robotics and automation. It is 2020 the year in which Prensilia strengthens this division and takes part in the Horizon 2020 APRIL project.
APRIL aims at developing a new generation of robots able to manipulate flexible and deformable materials. To meet this goal, Mia Hand was selected as flexible and reconfigurable anthropomorphic gripper. This would be able to adapt to several scenarios, in opposition to the traditional end-of-arm tooling systems that are specifically designed for one application.
No more rigid systems with limited functionality, but an end-effector that is able to reduce tool changes needed due to the variability of the products to be manipulated.

Prensilia and Mia Hand get the Compasso d’Oro 2022 award. This is the most prestigious prize for design in the World.
The reason for the jury’s recognition lies on the value given to the aesthetic components: overcome the limits associated with the traditional and binary concept of ability, and give credits to inclusivity and the value of uniqueness.
Mia Hand was born able to be useful to someone. It was born able to break prejudices.
